How the 1,111 areas were selected
The directory selects the 1,111 largest entries by recorded population from the official settlement data used for this directory. Entries are ranked by population descending, then source name and area code. London is included once as a regional entry; additional London neighbourhoods and wards are excluded.
England and Wales use ONS Census 2021 built-up areas, with London from Nomis Census 2021. Scotland uses NRS Census 2022 localities. Northern Ireland uses NISRA 2015 settlement boundaries and 2011 population counts. These different dates and geographic definitions mean this is a source-based ranking, not a definitive current population ranking of all UK towns.
